The educational reality in the city of Suwayr, north of Deir Ezzor, faces increasing challenges with the start of the new academic year, amid rising student numbers and damage to several schools, alongside shortages in class sections, seats, and school facilities, which negatively impacts the educational process.
Parents and the teaching staff demand the acceleration of rehabilitation and maintenance works for damaged schools, securing their basic necessities, and establishing new schools to accommodate the growing number of students, thereby contributing to providing a suitable educational environment and reducing overcrowding in classrooms.
86 schools rehabilitated and 10 out of service
Supervisor of the Educational Complex in the city of Suwayr, Saleh Al-Mohammed, stated in an interview with a SANA correspondent today, Wednesday, that the complex includes 96 primary, preparatory, and secondary schools, of which 86 are rehabilitated, while 10 schools remain out of service due to the conditions the region has passed through.
Al-Mohammed pointed out that relevant authorities have committed to rehabilitating and maintaining seven schools in the city of Suwayr, noting that the number of students in the area has exceeded 11,000 boys and girls, amid increasing demand for education, which necessitates establishing new schools to accommodate the growing numbers.
Al-Mohammed clarified that several schools in the towns of Al-Harajij and Abu Al-Nateel were rehabilitated through initiatives by residents.
Overcrowding exceeds 90 students per class section
For their part, teachers Dawood Al-Asi, Ahmad Al-Asi, and Mariam Al-Aboud, from the city of Suwayr, called for greater attention to the region's schools, given the severe overcrowding in class sections, explaining that the number of students in some sections exceeds 90 boys and girls, while in others it ranges between 70 and 80 students, which negatively affects the quality of education and teachers' ability to convey information to students as required.
The teachers urged the acceleration of school rehabilitation, especially since some require simple maintenance works, including windows and doors, before the onset of winter, alongside providing stationery, boards, and necessary educational supplies.
Efforts continue aimed at rehabilitating schools in Deir Ezzor Governorate and improving the reality of the educational sector, ensuring the continuity of the educational process and providing a suitable environment for students with the start of the new academic year.
