Study: Blood Sugar Monitors Improve Glucose Control in Type 2 Patients
US study confirms continuous glucose monitors improve glucose control in non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes patients.

A recent scientific study showed that the use of continuous blood glucose monitors helps patients with type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin significantly improve their glucose level control. These patients spent approximately five additional hours per day within the target blood sugar range, compared to the group that received only routine medical care.

The scientific website Medical Xpress reported on Saturday that the study was conducted by researchers from the American University of Colorado Anschutz and included 283 adults from 22 primary care clinics in the United States. The study followed participants for 26 weeks, and its results were published in the medical journal New England Journal of Medicine on October 14.

For his part, the results showed that patients who used continuous monitors recorded a greater reduction in glycated hemoglobin levels compared to the other group. Also, about twice as many of them managed to lower this indicator to less than 7 percent, a common treatment goal. The average glycated hemoglobin among device users decreased from 8.8 to 7.2 percent, compared to a decrease from 8.7 to 8 percent in the group that received routine care.

Researchers pointed out that persistent high blood sugar levels may increase the risk of serious complications, including heart and kidney diseases and vision problems. The study gains importance from its focus on the category of patients who do not use insulin, as evidence regarding the benefits of these devices for them is still less abundant. Researchers believe the results may contribute to strengthening medical recommendations and expanding opportunities for patients to obtain devices through insurance coverage.
