A recent scientific study has shown that the emotional content of conversations affects the way the brain processes speech and follows ideas, especially in situations where multiple conversations overlap simultaneously.
Impact of Emotions on Attention
The scientific website News-Medical reported on Tuesday that researchers from the University of Helsinki in Finland, led by Pirkko Häkkinen, studied the effect of emotional meanings of conversations on the brain's speech processing, and the study results were published in the journal "JNeurosci," specialized in neuroscience.
The researchers conducted an experiment in which participants listened to simultaneous conversations, while monitoring their brain activity while listening to conversations with emotional content and others that were more neutral, aiming to determine how the brain responds to differences in speech content.
Brain Processing Efficiency
The results showed that conversations containing strong negative emotions and carrying social significance may help the brain track speech more efficiently, indicating that conversations that evoke emotions such as anger and annoyance may capture attention in a way that differs from neutral conversations, without this meaning that negative emotions make understanding speech easier in all cases.
The study revealed that a sudden transition between unrelated topics requires additional mental effort to process emotional content, while the coherence and sequence of ideas help the brain utilize the context of previous speech and predict what comes next, thereby supporting speech tracking.
Mechanisms of Speech Prediction
The analyses also showed that brain activity enabled researchers to predict the rhythm of speech heard by participants more accurately when conversations carried emotional meaning, reflecting differences in brain response depending on the content of the speech and the way it transitions between topics.
The results indicate that understanding conversations does not depend on words alone, but is also affected by their emotional meanings and the coherence of ideas, which helps broaden the understanding of mechanisms of attention to speech and its processing, especially in social situations where conversations overlap and require tracking multiple sources of information.
