Study: Obesity Surgery Achieves Long-Term Remission of Type 2 Diabetes
Long-term study reveals obesity surgery achieves remission in 58% of patients vs 3% with medical treatment.

A long-term scientific study showed that obesity and metabolic surgery is associated with sustained remission of type 2 diabetes for many years, meaning the disappearance of the disease's symptoms and signs for a specific period. Fifty-eight percent of participants who underwent surgery achieved remission, compared to 3% of participants who received medical treatment and interventions to improve lifestyle.

Study Details

The website 'Medical Xpress', in a report published yesterday Monday citing the University of Oklahoma, stated that the study was published in the scientific journal 'Diabetes Care', led by John P. Kirwan, Executive Director of the University's Harold Hamm Diabetes Center, with participation from researchers from several American institutions. Donald Simmons, from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, was one of the lead authors.

Research Methodology

The study included 262 people, with a median follow-up period of 11 years, reaching 14 years for some participants. This allowed researchers to assess the extent of long-term disease remission after surgery, compared to medical treatment and lifestyle changes.

Medical Recommendations

The results indicate that obesity and metabolic surgery may provide long-term benefits for some patients with type 2 diabetes, although remission rates vary depending on the duration of the disease and other health factors. The results do not mean that surgery is suitable for all patients, and they emphasize the importance of continuing long-term patient follow-up to assess the sustainability of diabetes remission after surgery. It is necessary to choose the most appropriate treatment for each patient according to their health condition and duration of illness, under specialized medical supervision.
