Discovery of the Cardiac Neural Network
A recent scientific study has revealed the existence of a network of nerve cells inside the heart that plays an important role in regulating its beats and controlling its functions, which may open the door to developing more precise treatments for some heart disorders in the future. The study was published in the scientific journal "Cell" and was conducted by researchers from Yale University and the University of Texas Southwestern in the United States. It relied on experiments conducted on mice to study the role of the cardiac neural network in regulating heart activity and maintaining the regularity of its beats.
Components and Functions of the Network
The results showed that the network, known as the "intrinsic cardiac nervous system," comprises approximately 40,000 nerve cells concentrated in fat clusters surrounding the heart. Its role is not limited to transmitting signals between the heart and the brain, but extends to contributing to the regulation of the heart's electrical activity and coordinating the contraction and relaxation of its muscle. The study clarifies that this network helps the heart adapt to changes occurring in the body, such as physical activity, emotions, and changes in body posture, by regulating nerve signals affecting its heart rate and blood pumping method.
Mechanisms of Action and Future Applications
The cardiac neural network exchanges signals with the brain and the peripheral nervous system, and it can also modify some heart functions locally, without relying completely on signals incoming from the central nervous system, highlighting its role in regulating heart function. Researchers believe that understanding the mechanisms of this network may contribute to developing treatments targeting specific nerves associated with the heart, rather than having a broad effect on the nervous system, with the possibility of studying the use of electrical stimulation or drugs targeting specific neural pathways.
Current Research Stage
The results are still in the research stage, as the experiments were conducted on mice, necessitating additional studies to verify their applicability to humans and evaluate the possibility of benefiting from them in developing future treatments for heart disorders. The "Sputnik" agency mentioned in a report published yesterday, Tuesday, the details of this study, which sheds light on the importance of this new scientific discovery.
