Study Tests AI's Ability to Predict Concussion Symptoms
A Norwegian study reveals AI's ability to predict headache and fatigue in concussion patients 24 hours in advance via biomarkers.

Early Symptom Prediction

A recent study showed that artificial intelligence could help predict the onset of headaches and fatigue about 24 hours before they occur in people suffering from persistent symptoms after a concussion, by analyzing biomarkers, potentially allowing them to organize their daily activities according to their health condition.

The scientific journal 'Medical Xpress' reported yesterday that researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology tested the ability of AI models to analyze the body's physiological indicators and monitor patterns associated with the appearance of symptoms, with the study results published in the journal 'Brain Injury Rehabilitation'.

Research Methodology and Indicators

The study included 20 people suffering from persistent symptoms after a concussion, who recorded their health status daily over a period of 28 days, alongside measurements of physical indicators, including heart rate, skin temperature, and muscle tension in the neck and shoulder regions.

The results showed that one AI model was able to predict moderate to severe headaches within the next 24 hours, with accuracy ranging from moderate to good, as scientists explored the possibility of using the model to predict fatigue.

Future Applications

Researchers explained that persistent symptoms in some concussion patients may be accompanied by patterns of physical changes that can be monitored over time, allowing smart systems to analyze these indicators and estimate the likelihood of symptoms appearing later.

These results could contribute in the future to the development of health applications or systems linked to wearable devices, such as smartwatches, to provide alerts when indicators preceding headaches or fatigue are detected, helping patients plan work, study, and daily activities according to their condition.

Concussion is a mild brain injury usually resulting from a blow to the head or a strong impact on the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly, temporarily affecting brain functions.
