Sudan Doctors Network Warns of Threat to Health Services Due to Power Station Attacks
Sudan Doctors Network warns that attacks on power stations threaten health services and worsen the humanitarian crisis.

The "Sudan Doctors Network" warned on Thursday that targeting power stations exacerbates the humanitarian crisis and threatens health services in the country.

The non-governmental medical network expressed "deep concern over the continuous escalation of attacks targeting power stations and civilian infrastructure in several Sudanese states" in a statement on the (X) platform, pointing out "the catastrophic consequences affecting health services, water, and essential services relied upon by millions of citizens."

It added that "power stations going out of service or suffering repeated damage does not only result in power outages, but also threatens the operation of hospitals, dialysis centers, intensive care units, blood banks, and pharmaceutical and vaccine cold chains," warning that this "places the lives of patients and the most vulnerable groups at serious risk."

Protecting health infrastructure is a humanitarian necessity

The network called on "all parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law and take necessary measures to protect vital civilian facilities and ensure the continuity of essential services relied upon by populations across the country."

It also emphasized that "protecting health and service infrastructure is an urgent humanitarian necessity, and its continued deterioration threatens to trigger widespread health crises whose effects could reach millions of civilians."

These warnings come amid the closure of many hospitals and medical facilities, with remaining ones relying on generators facing a severe fuel shortage. Additionally, power outages have disrupted communication and internet networks, hindering coordination among medical staff and the reception of emergency cases.

Last Monday, Rapid Support Forces targeted five power stations with drones, causing power outages in wide areas of eastern Sudan.
