World number nine Iga Swiatek began her campaign at the 1000-point Wuhan tournament with a dominant victory over Magdalyna Fręch, 6-2 and 6-1, in a purely Polish matchup in the second round on Wednesday. This marks Swiatek’s 40th win of the year, adding to her six titles across the four Grand Slams.
Swiatek's advancement
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the first set was closely contested, lasting over an hour and requiring Swiatek to overcome a 0-2 deficit and save 7 out of 8 break points before finally taking the lead in the fourth game. With relentless pressure from her powerful forehands, Swiatek won ten consecutive games to take a 4-0 lead in the second set.

Latvian Jelena Ostapenko caused an upset by defeating second-seeded American Jessica Pegula, 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), and 6-3. Meanwhile, British player Sonay Kartal, ranked 170th and absent for six months this year due to a stress fracture in her spine, upset ninth-seeded Swiss player Belinda Bencic, 6-0 and 7-5, securing a meeting with Italian Jasmine Paolini.
