Syria and 18 countries condemn Colombia opening embassy in Jerusalem
Foreign ministers of Syria and 18 Arab and Islamic countries condemn Colombia's embassy opening in Jerusalem as invalid.

The foreign ministers of Syria and 18 Arab and Islamic countries condemned, on Friday, the opening of Colombia's embassy to the Israeli occupation in occupied Jerusalem, affirming that this step contradicts relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and undermines international efforts aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace based on the two-state solution.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that the foreign ministers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Syria, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Algeria, Djibouti, Sudan, Somalia, the Sultanate of Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Egypt, and Yemen strongly expressed their firm rejection of Colombia opening its embassy in Jerusalem.

Invalidity of Measures

The ministers reiterated that any measure or decision aimed at changing the legal or historical status of occupied Jerusalem, or recognizing it as Israel's capital, is null and void and has no legal effect, noting that this position aligns with relevant United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions.

UN Resolutions

The ministers pointed to, in particular, Security Council resolutions 476 (1980) and 478 (1980), which reject attempts to change the character or status of Jerusalem, calling on states to withdraw their diplomatic missions from the city, which is part of the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967.

International Demands

They called on the Colombian government to reconsider and reverse this decision, fulfill its obligations under international law, and refrain from taking measures that infringe upon the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent and sovereign State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Colombia opened its embassy in occupied Jerusalem last Wednesday, a step met with widespread Arab and international rejection.
