Transport Minister Yarab Badr held talks with Egyptian Railway Authority Chairman Mohamed Amer Abdel Aziz on ways to enhance joint cooperation and develop Syria's railway sector, leveraging Egyptian expertise and capabilities to rehabilitate infrastructure and modernize the rail transport system.
Infrastructure Modernization
The Ministry of Transport stated via its Telegram channel that the meeting, held yesterday Wednesday on the sidelines of the 39th session of the Arab Ministers of Transport Council, reviewed Egypt's experience in modernizing the railway system, particularly in rehabilitating infrastructure, developing the fleet, and upgrading signaling, control, and safety systems. It also emphasized enhancing local manufacturing and qualifying and training technical personnel.
Minister Badr stressed the importance of benefiting from Egyptian expertise in rehabilitating lines and infrastructure, updating technical equipment and systems, and improving operational efficiency. He noted that exchanging experiences and successful practices forms a fundamental pillar to support efforts to develop Syria's railway sector and put it on a path to modernization.
Prospects for Technical Cooperation
Both sides also discussed prospects for technical and operational cooperation in rehabilitating and developing facilities and equipment, and improving operational and safety standards. This aims to enhance the role of rail transport in moving passengers and cargo, supporting trade flows, and linking governorates and border crossings.
Field Visit to Stations
The Transport Minister and his accompanying delegation toured the Sidi Gaber station in Alexandria and Ramses station in Cairo to inspect station management mechanisms and related investments, particularly multi-story parking lots and shopping malls. These facilities play a role in generating additional financial resources to help reduce deficits caused by low passenger transport revenues compared to operational costs.
Meeting Context
Attendees included Transport Deputy Minister for Land Transport Mohamed Rahhal, Syrian Deputy Ambassador in Cairo Dr. Mohamed Abu Saria, Government Communications Director Hussein Hajj Abdullah, and from the Egyptian side, Mahmoud Al-Radini, Director General of the Technical Office at the Egyptian Railway Authority.
The 39th session of the Arab Ministers of Transport Council began on Tuesday in Alexandria, Egypt, to discuss ways to develop the Arab transport system and enhance integration and connectivity between road, maritime, rail, and air networks. The session aims to support intra-regional trade, improve logistics service efficiency, and strengthen Arab cooperation in transport sectors to facilitate the movement of people and goods between countries.
