The head of Syria's Central Inspection and Supervision Authority, Amer Al-Ali, called for strengthening cooperation among member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to protect public funds and combat corruption, affirming Syria's commitment to completing the ratification procedures for the Mecca Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Combating Corruption Laws. This came during his participation in the Third Ministerial Meeting of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Bodies in Member States of the Organisation, held in the Azerbaijani capital Baku today, Wednesday.
In the same context, Al-Ali stated that combating corruption is a fundamental condition for recovery and stability in Syria, amid the national phase requiring the reconstruction of state institutions and the restoration of citizens' trust. He emphasized that protecting public funds is a national responsibility and a collective duty dictated by Islamic brotherhood ties and shared human values.
For his part, Al-Ali clarified that Syria has signed the Mecca Agreement on Cooperation in the Field of Combating Corruption Laws and reaffirms its commitment to completing its ratification procedures, based on its belief in the importance of collective action and strengthening cooperation among member states. He pointed out that confronting transboundary crimes requires comprehensive coordination and the exchange of information and investigations between law enforcement agencies.
He noted that the main challenge is not limited to the existence of legal texts, but includes their activation and practical application, especially in the field of recovering stolen and smuggled assets. He explained that this requires accelerating procedures for tracking cross-border criminal proceeds and establishing direct communication channels between law enforcement agencies, ensuring rapid response and effective cooperation.
Al-Ali stressed Syria's aspiration to establish effective partnerships with member states, based on respecting national sovereignty, achieving justice, and recovering public funds as a right of peoples. He affirmed his country's support for draft resolutions aimed at combating corruption and recovering assets, while participants discussed ways to enhance cooperation and exchange expertise in the fields of integrity and transparency.
He added that participants in the Baku meeting discussed activating cooperation mechanisms in enforcing relevant laws, reflecting the shared desire to confront common challenges through organized institutional action.
