The Ministry of Local Administration and Environment participated in the 65th session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), held in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, from October 12 to 16. The Ministry announced on Sunday that the session sessions focused on three main axes: the timeline for working group reports, the financial status and credit fund of the Panel, and controls on the use of artificial intelligence to ensure transparency and scientific accuracy.
Climate Challenges and National Priorities
The Ministry's representative at the conference and the National Coordinator for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Dr. Shireen Al-Radawi, outlined the main climate challenges facing Syria and its priorities to mitigate the impacts of climate change. She pointed out the droughts, fires, dust storms, and floods witnessed in 2026, emphasizing the importance of transferring modern technology to developing countries and providing them with copies of publications and reports issued by the Panel.
Enhancing Participation and Expertise
Al-Radawi stressed the necessity of delivering these reports to universities and scientific research centers and utilizing them in issues related to climate change. She also called for enhancing the participation of national experts in scholarship programs and increasing the representation of developing countries, to ensure more effective participation in the Panel's work and efforts to address climate change. Climate change constitutes one of the most prominent global challenges currently due to its repercussions on natural resources, food security, and ecosystems.
International Cooperation and Adaptation
She pointed to the increasing frequency of natural disasters and working with international organizations to prepare scientific risk assessment studies for climate risks. These studies aim to support strategic planning, enhance adaptive capacity, and mitigate the negative effects of this phenomenon, reflecting Syria's commitment to international cooperation to face these current challenges.
