Syria participated in the second session of the Board of Directors of the Universal Postal Union, which concluded today, Friday, in the Swiss city of Bern, with a delegation led by Imad al-Din Hamad, the Director General of the Syrian Postal Establishment. This session began its work on October 26, discussing organizational issues of international postal work and ways to develop and ensure its continuity.
Restoring Services and Enhancing International Presence
Imad al-Din Hamad clarified in a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that Syria's participation comes within the framework of efforts to enhance the services of sending and receiving postal parcels from various countries around the world, and to strengthen the integration of the Syrian postal service into the global postal system. He pointed out that restoring postal services and expanding the horizons of international cooperation represent a step towards a new stage of development and openness, which enhances the ability of the Syrian postal service to keep pace with developments in the global postal sector.
Resumption of Services After a Long Interruption
For its part, the Syrian Postal Establishment announced at the beginning of October, after an interruption of more than ten years, the resumption of the service of sending postal parcels from Syria to all countries of the world through the network of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The establishment had previously reactivated the service of receiving international postal parcels in early July, through the postal exchange office at Damascus International Airport.
Role of the Universal Postal Union
The Universal Postal Union, established in 1874 and headquartered in the Swiss capital Bern, is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. It works to coordinate international postal services and set the rules governing postal exchange between member states, and its board of directors consists of 41 member states responsible for ensuring the continuity of the Union's work between conferences and supervising its activities.
Syria had previously participated in the first session of the Board of Directors of the Universal Postal Union, held in Bern from May 4 to 8, reflecting Syria's continued engagement in international specialized events in the postal sector.
