Syria’s Permanent Representative: New Syria Transforms Regime’s Legacy into International Partnership Opportunities
Syria’s UN envoy confirms the transformation of the ousted regime’s legacy into international partnership opportunities in disarmament and chemical weapons.

Ibrahim Al-Ali, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, affirmed that the new Syria has transformed the legacy of the ousted regime into opportunities for cooperation and partnership with the international community, particularly in the chemical weapons file, with its full and transparent commitment to its international obligations.

The Permanent Mission of the Arab Republic of Syria to the United Nations stated in a statement via the "X" platform that Al-Ali delivered the statement of the Arab Republic of Syria within the framework of the general debate of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly concerning "Disarmament and International Security," in which he reviewed the new role of Syria in enhancing international cooperation on this file.

Al-Ali pointed to the beginning of the process of destroying chemical materials discovered in Syria, the first of its kind since the country's liberation, alongside efforts to achieve justice for chemical weapons victims and hold perpetrators accountable, and Syria's joining the international partnership to combat impunity led by France.

He highlighted the decision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors to remove the "non-compliance" item regarding Syria, considering it an international recognition of its full and transparent cooperation with the Agency.

Al-Ali stressed that supporting the transformation Syria is undergoing and countering attempts to destabilize it and hinder its recovery constitute a shared responsibility and interest of the international community, affirming that supporting Syria's success and stability represents a direct investment in the security of the region and the world, and a victory for the values of dialogue, cooperation, and commitment to international law.

He also condemned repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, affirming that they hinder cooperation with international organizations, and called for practical steps that support Syria's security, stability, and recovery.

Syria had previously, on July 9, fully restored its rights and privileges in the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), by a decision adopted by the Organization's Executive Council by consensus, in light of the progress made in cooperation with the Organization's Technical Secretariat and addressing the legacy of the chemical program left by the ousted regime.
