The Syrian Ministry of Agriculture participated in the meeting of the High-Level Joint Technical Committee concerning the agriculture and water sectors, as part of the ninth edition of the Cairo Water Week. The aim was to explore ways to enhance joint Arab cooperation and address the challenges facing these two sectors.
During the meeting, there was discussion on following up the implementation of the executive action plan for the Cairo Declaration of 2025, issued by the seventh meeting of the committee on October 14 of the same year.
Expanding the Use of Non-Conventional Water Resources
The meeting addressed mechanisms for expanding the use of non-conventional water resources in agriculture, as well as the voluntary application of guidelines related to water allocation for the agricultural sector. Mohammad Seilin, Director of Agricultural Production Support at the Ministry, emphasized the importance of employing modern technologies, spatial information systems, remote sensing, and geographic data to address informational gaps in the agriculture and water sectors.
Confronting Climate Change
Seilin noted that discussions focused on enhancing the capacities of both sectors to confront climate change and extreme weather phenomena. The meeting concluded with a number of recommendations and proposals, the most prominent of which was studying the establishment of a regional Arab fund to support the agriculture and water sectors and finance projects to enhance resilience. This is alongside completing the implementation of the recommendation from the seventh meeting regarding the completion of the national survey for the two sectors in each country.
Intensifying Joint Arab Efforts
The recommendations included the necessity to intensify and coordinate joint Arab efforts to protect food and water security, and to enhance integration between the agriculture and water sectors, considering them two fundamental pillars for achieving sustainable development. It is worth noting that the Ministry of Agriculture participated in October 2025 in the events of the eighth edition of the Cairo Water Week, held in the Arab Republic of Egypt under the theme "Innovative Solutions for Climate Change Adaptation and Water Sustainability."
