The Syrian Atomic Energy Authority announced the role of specialized microbiology and immunology laboratories in studying pathogenic microorganisms and their immune response, through conducting research and laboratory tests that contribute to developing diagnostic and preventive measures for infectious diseases.

Specialized Research and Laboratory Diagnostics

Abdul Hamid Qatini, the director of the Authority's media office, clarified that the laboratories work on studying bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and understanding the nature of their interaction with the immune system, along with studying endemic and epidemic diseases in Syria. The laboratories also isolate, classify, and preserve microbial strains for scientific research purposes.

Qatini noted that the laboratories pay special attention to studying bacterial resistance to antibiotics and conducting laboratory tests to determine their sensitivity to various antibiotics, thereby providing scientific data that supports research related to combating bacterial infections and improving diagnostic methods.

Food and Water Safety and Vaccine Evaluation

Qatini added that the laboratories' areas of work extend to verifying the microbial safety of food and water, studying the cytotoxicity of certain compounds and drugs, in addition to evaluating the efficacy of imported and locally produced vaccines. Research activities include studying the effects of radiation on microorganisms and utilizing scientific results to develop related research and laboratory applications.

The laboratories base their research directions on the "One Health" concept, which is based on the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health, through studying zoonotic and emerging diseases and contributing to monitoring pathogenic agents and understanding their transmission methods, thereby supporting scientific efforts aimed at limiting the spread of diseases and epidemics.

Supporting Scientific Research and Public Health

Qatini pointed out that the laboratories work on developing and standardizing laboratory protocols and procedures in accordance with international scientific standards, which contributes to improving result quality and enhancing the reliability of analyses and research. The laboratories' activities come within the framework of the research and applied role undertaken by the Syrian Atomic Energy Authority in medical and biological fields, and its efforts to utilize scientific capabilities and laboratory technologies to serve health and research sectors.

These laboratories contribute to strengthening the scientific research and laboratory diagnostic system in Syria, and developing knowledge related to infectious diseases and immunity, thereby supporting public health protection and keeping pace with scientific and technological developments in this field.
