Syrian Atomic Energy Commission Conducts Radiological Survey at Damascus Petrochemical Refinery
The Atomic Energy Commission conducts a survey and sample collection at the Damascus Petrochemical Refinery to assess radiological and environmental risks.

The Syrian Atomic Energy Commission carried out radiological surveying and sample collection from the waste of the Damascus Petrochemical Refinery, with the aim of assessing the radiological status of the site, determining the nature of the materials present, their characteristics, and their potential hazard levels, thereby contributing to the protection of workers and the surrounding environment.

Survey and Analysis Procedures

The Commission stated via its Telegram channel on Friday that the operations carried out on Thursday included conducting field radiological measurements in waste collection yards, alongside collecting samples for specialized laboratory analysis by the Commission. The goal is to determine the composition and physical and chemical properties of the materials, detect any potential radiological activity, and assess associated risks, whether radiological or non-radiological.

Completion of Analyses and Report Preparation

The Commission indicated that it is working on completing laboratory analyses and studying the results of field measurements, in preparation for drafting a comprehensive technical report to be submitted to the refinery management. This report will include the results of tests and analyses, an assessment of the nature of the waste and its hazard levels, along with necessary technical recommendations for their safe handling and management.

Scientific Role and Technical Support

It highlighted that these operations fall within the framework of the scientific and technical role it undertakes, which includes conducting radiological surveys and specialized laboratory analyses, characterizing materials and assessing their risks, and providing technical support and consultations to industrial facilities. This enhances worker safety and contributes to protecting public health and the environment.

In the same context, a specialized team from the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, in cooperation with the Syrian Petroleum Company, carried out a field mission on September 25 last year to assess radiological and environmental safety at the Homs Refinery General Company, with the aim of ensuring the safety of facilities, workers, and the surrounding environment.
