Ahmed Ismail, director of the Damascus branch of the Syrian Bakeries Establishment, revealed that the total number of bakeries in Damascus is currently 28, of which 23 are operational, while 5 are undergoing comprehensive rehabilitation. Ismail explained in a statement to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) on Tuesday that the establishment is working to rebuild the destroyed bakeries in the Yarmouk camp and Qaboun district to raise the total number to 30 bakeries.
For his part, Ismail pointed out that work is underway to rehabilitate 5 other bakeries, including Al-Amara, Barzeh 2 (pre-fabricated), Al-Mazzeh 4, and Ibn Al-Weheed 2 and 4, as part of the establishment's plan to continue developing the technical infrastructure. He noted that the establishment completed rehabilitation works for 9 bakeries during the current year, 6 in cooperation with international organizations and 3 in partnership with the private sector.
He added that actual production volume ranges between 200 and 285 tons of flour daily, with production based on market needs, focusing on peak demand days, Thursday and Saturday. He noted that the technical situation is gradually improving thanks to regular maintenance, pointing out that breakdowns are divided into emergency electrical and mechanical issues that can be mitigated through preventive maintenance programs.
He highlighted that the establishment is implementing a plan to replace old production lines with modern ones, and has supported the alternative energy system by installing 15 new electric generators as immediate alternatives. The establishment continues to implement rehabilitation plans in various governorates in cooperation with international organizations and the private sector to improve bread quality and meet citizens' needs.
