Ibrahim Al-Ali, Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, affirmed in a speech delivered before the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday that the new Syria has chosen to honor its international commitments and enhance cooperation with international institutions, contributing to restoring trust, consolidating stability, and reestablishing Syria's place in the international community.
For his part, Al-Ali pointed out with pride that Syria's name is now associated with honoring commitments and success stories, as reflected in the statement by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, after decades during which the ousted regime tarnished Syria's name through the use of chemical weapons, drug trafficking, and destabilization.
He added that following its liberation, Syria chose to confront the legacy left by the ousted regime with responsibility and courage, securing its borders, combating terrorism and drug networks, and engaging in addressing inherited nuclear and chemical files, based on a firm belief that its security and regional security are built through partnership.
Cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency
Al-Ali explained that the nuclear file provides concrete evidence of the depth of the transformation Syria has undergone, which has chosen full and transparent cooperation with the IAEA as a strategic option, noting that after approximately a decade and a half of closing doors to the Agency, Syria took the initiative to open all sites without restrictions.
Al-Ali disclosed that Syria voluntarily disclosed previously undeclared nuclear materials and subjected them to IAEA safeguards within the country, resulting in the lifting of the inherited non-compliance clause with Syria, emphasizing that this transformation gains special importance amid declining trust in the multilateral system and escalating conflicts.
Condemnation of Israeli Aggressions
Al-Ali condemned Israeli aggressions against Syria, noting that Israel did not limit itself to violations and incursions in southern Syria, but also bombed sites within the country on the same day that Grossi was visiting Syria to follow up on efforts to conclude the nuclear file.
He pointed out that while Syria is engaging transparently with the Agency and affirming its determination to honor its commitments and spare the region from risks, it faces Israeli violations of its sovereignty and undermining of its security, calling on the international community to support and protect this path.
He added that Syria has chosen to bear its responsibility courageously and to preserve an international system that is crumbling under the weight of violations, whose credibility and effectiveness are undergoing a severe test, stressing the necessity of protecting this path from aggressions.
