The Syrian Arab Republic Mission to the United Nations in New York, in partnership with representatives of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Turkey, Qatar, and Canada, organized a high-level event that saw the launch of a Syrian-led international task force, called "Breath of Freedom," aimed at eliminating any possible remnants of the former regime's chemical weapons program.
Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said in a statement to SANA that the launch of the team comes at a historic moment that coincides with the fifteenth anniversary of the start of the Syrian revolution, and the holding of a Security Council session on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria, pointing out that Syria, after being attacked and treated as a suspect during the era of the former regime, is today leading 7 countries to end the chemical weapons file.
These countries stand by Syria to get rid of the legacy of chemical weapons, Olabi said, because they have seen the courage and commitment of the Syrians to get rid of this very difficult legacy over the past months.
In a statement to the Syrian Al-Ekhbariya channel, Olabi explained that the name "Breath of Freedom" carries a symbolic significance related to the stage of Syrians taking their breath after they suffocated for years with chemical weapons, and the violations that affected their right to freedom, political rights and human rights, pointing out that the situation in Syria today is different and enjoys great international support.
He pointed out that the chemical weapons file is one of the most difficult files due to the fact that it is a secret program, and may involve risks for the Syrian people in the event of any ill-considered explosion, explaining that there are multiple coordination groups and countries that complement the Syrian government's efforts on the ground, and have expertise in destruction, finding, transport, and insurance, and that many international meetings will be held in Syria in this regard.
The "Breath of Freedom" team includes (the United States, Britain, Qatar, Turkey, Germany, Canada, and France).
Syria continues to affirm its full commitment to the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and to dispose of the legacy of the former regime in this file, and stresses that this commitment is not limited to being a legal obligation, but also reflects the suffering of Syrians who have been victims of these weapons.
