Syrian Media Minister: Restructuring the media system safeguards national cohesion
Syrian Media Minister emphasizes restructuring the media landscape to purify discourse and ensure professional, free journalism.

Syrian Media Minister Khaled Zaerour affirmed that Syria is undergoing a foundational stage aimed at restructuring its media system from within, purging media discourse of the legacy of incitement and falsification, and transitioning towards a professional and free media environment that safeguards national cohesion and keeps pace with the transitional phase.

Minister Zaerour clarified in a speech delivered today, Wednesday, during the opening of the 56th ordinary session of the Arab Ministers of Media Council at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat in Cairo, that Syria is preparing for major national milestones and a foundational turning point within the new Syria, which necessitated focusing efforts and energies on building a suitable legislative environment.

For his part, the Media Minister pointed out that amid rapid transformations, media responsibility is no longer limited to merely reporting news, but has become linked to verifying information and presenting it clearly, balanced, and honestly, safeguarding public trust, enhancing public awareness, and reducing fragmentation. This responsibility becomes more complex as events accelerate, news sources multiply, and narratives diversify.

Minister Zaerour stressed the role of the media professional in bridging the gap between events and the audience, linking field facts to their impact on people's lives, and helping them understand regional transformations by following events with awareness and responsibility, presenting a clear picture that aids in grasping their dimensions and repercussions.

In conclusion of his speech, the Media Minister announced the handover of the presidency of the 56th ordinary session of the Arab Ministers of Media Council to the Federal Republic of Somalia, wishing the Somali Minister success in leading the current session, and affirming that Syria's transition from the presidency seat to an active member seat will witness a doubled Syrian presence, driven by faith in joint Arab action.

Syria had taken over the presidency of the 55th ordinary session of the Arab Ministers of Media Council in Cairo last year, and the Arab Ministers of Media Council had unanimously voted at that time to choose Damascus as the Arab Media Capital for 2028.

It is worth noting that the Arab Ministers of Media Council, established in 1964 under the umbrella of the Arab League, is the highest ministerial body concerned with setting common media strategies and coordinating media policies and plans among member states to face challenges and consolidate Arab identity and issues.
