Syrian Paint Industry Seeks to Develop Production
Syria's paint industry aims to improve quality and variety to meet market needs.

The paint industry in Syria is working to develop its products and enhance its ability to meet market needs, amid increasing requirements regarding variety, product quality, and production costs, alongside the role of traders and craftsmen in providing suitable materials for various uses. The importance of developing this industry lies in strengthening the presence of local products in the market by improving production efficiency and providing necessary supplies, expanding consumer options, and achieving a balance between quality, prices, and purchasing power.

Requirements for Industry Development

Mohammad Ridwan Abidin, a member of the board of directors of the Damascus and Rural Damascus Chamber of Industry, clarified that the local paint industry needs more support in securing raw materials, noting that customs duties imposed on some of these materials are among the factors affecting production costs and the competitiveness of local products. Abidin pointed out difficulties in securing "mazut" due to limited available quantities and rising prices, emphasizing the importance of studying mechanisms that allow factories to secure their needs for necessary solvents for production, thereby contributing to stabilizing the production process and reducing costs.

Abidin highlighted the importance of applying technical specifications and standards to local and imported products based on clear and unified foundations, which enhances product quality and provides equal opportunities for competition in the market. Abidin proposed allowing the production of multiple varieties within a single type of paint, provided that manufacturers submit an independent technical sheet for each product to the relevant government authorities, detailing its specifications and technical characteristics, while adhering to them and subject to the supervision of competent authorities. Abidin stressed the importance of cooperation between the public and private sectors to establish a specialized laboratory to conduct technical tests on paint products according to approved standards.

Product Variety and Market Needs

Adnan Sharaf, a paint shop owner in Damascus, confirmed that the variety and availability of products, along with prices and product quality, are fundamental factors in determining consumer choices and sales movement, given the differing needs and purchasing power of individuals, workshop owners, and residential projects. Sharaf noted that paint shops rely on multiple sources to secure their goods, including local factories and importers, while the choice of varieties is linked to demand levels, prices, and the technical characteristics of each product.

Sharaf explained that import costs and material availability may reflect on selling prices, emphasizing the importance of stable supply and the availability of diverse varieties that meet consumer needs, alongside clear quality standards for local and imported products. The paint industry is considered one of the promising industries in Syria, due to its role in supporting reconstruction efforts and meeting the needs of the construction, engineering, and industrial sectors, as well as its contribution to enhancing local production and providing job opportunities.
