The phenomenon of telephone cable theft hits  the infrastructure of the sector

The Syrian Telecommunications Company (STC) has launched a new interactive electronic platform under the name of "Together We Protect It", dedicated to receiving reports from citizens and workers related to any practices, violations and excesses that may negatively affect the company's performance or affect the interests of subscribers.

The company explained through an official post on its Facebook page that this step is part of its continuous efforts to develop institutional performance, expand communication channels, and consolidate the principles of integrity, transparency and accountability to ensure raising the quality of services and improving the relationship with customers.

Network Targeting

In a related context, the company announced yesterday the disconnection of fixed phone and internet services to thousands of subscribers in the vicinity of Damascus University.

This sudden outage came as a result of acts of vandalism and theft that targeted a number of main cables feeding these areas belonging to the Kafr Sousa telephone center, which deprived a large segment of citizens and institutions of basic services.

The company said that the concerned authorities immediately began organizing the necessary necessary controls to investigate the incident, in parallel with the mobilization of technical workshops that began field preparations for the work of replacing the damaged cables and rehabilitating the affected network to ensure the return of services to subscribers as soon as possible. The Department confirmed that the repeated attacks on the infrastructure of the telecommunications sector cause significant material damage and impose additional technical and operational burdens that affect the stability and cohesion of the network.

String Thefts for Feeder Cables for Telephone Centers

Last April, Syrian Telecom  announced that its networks in a number of Syrian regions and governorates, including Damascus, are exposed to cases of theft and theft of cables, which leads to the disconnection of fixed telephone services and ADSL internet service to subscribers.

In its statements, the company confirmed that these attacks cause direct damage to the infrastructure of the telecommunications sector, and reflect negatively on the continuity and quality of service delivery.

The company called on citizens to report any suspected cases related to cable theft or sabotage, and to cooperate with the concerned authorities to maintain the integrity of the network.

During the past months, Damascus has  witnessed a series of theft incidents in the areas of Al-Midan, Al-Qassa, Abbasiyin, Bab Sharqi and Bab Touma, where the cables feeding the telephone centers were stolen or vandalized, which caused thousands of operating lines to go out of service, before returning to work after repairs that sometimes last for several days.

The Syrian Telecommunications Company's data indicates that these attacks have become remarkably frequent, which leaves direct effects on the continuity of service, in addition to increasing burdens on maintenance teams working in emergency conditions to restore the network to work in the shortest possible time.

Call for Cooperation

In the face of these growing challenges, the Syrian Telecommunications Company renewed its call to citizens to cooperate jointly to protect public facilities and to immediately report any suspected cases related to the theft or sabotage of cables and equipment.

She pointed out that its technical teams are dealing with these emergency malfunctions in accordance with urgent operational procedures aimed at minimizing the duration of the outage, considering that the awareness and contribution of the citizen through the new platform represents a key pillar to maintain the continuity of services and ensure their access to all subscribers.
