Tanker hit by unknown projectile off Saudi coast, crew evacuated
UK maritime authority confirms tanker hit by unknown projectile off Jubail, crew evacuated safely.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations announced on Saturday that a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile on Friday, 68 nautical miles northeast of the Saudi city of Jubail, and all crew members were evacuated safely.

This came in a statement issued by the British authority, which said it received a delayed report from the company’s security official about the incident, which occurred on Friday at 09:00 (UTC). It clarified that all crew members were unharmed and evacuated, with no environmental impact reported at the time of the report.

It noted that authorities are investigating the incident, urging ships to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity. The statement did not include details regarding the identity of the tanker or the party responsible for launching the projectile.

This comes amid ongoing tension in Saudi Arabia following Houthi attacks on civilian facilities and holy sites in the Kingdom. In the latest developments, the coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen announced on Friday the interception and destruction of a drone launched towards the Eastern Region of the Kingdom, according to a statement by coalition spokesperson Turki Al-Maliki.

On Thursday, the coalition announced the death of 19 people and injuries to 364 others due to Houthi attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Abha Airport in southern Saudi Arabia. The coalition also announced on Thursday that the city of Medina was targeted.

Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition to support the Yemeni government against the Houthi group, which has controlled the capital Sanaa and several provinces since September 2014.
