Agreement between Tartous Agriculture Directorate and WFP to develop the citrus and olive seedling production center and increase its capacity.

The Tartous Agriculture Directorate and a team from the World Food Programme (WFP) agreed, during a meeting between them, on the stages of rehabilitating the citrus and olive seedling production center, and determining the works to be implemented and their priorities. This agreement aims to develop the center's operations, increase its production capacity, and improve the quality of seedlings in terms of quantity and type.

Maintenance and Development Works

Tartous Agriculture Director Dr. Muhammad Ahmad clarified, in a statement to SANA on Saturday, that the agreement included maintenance works for the greenhouse, grafting machines, and irrigation networks. He pointed out that work will begin with the production sector, followed by the service sector, with continued cooperation between both sides in all stages of the project through a joint working team responsible for monitoring implementation details and completed works.

Implementation Mechanisms and Studies

Ahmad added that cooperation will continue according to clear mechanisms to be adopted upon the start of work, alongside completing the cost study and commencing the implementation of works. He noted that the World Food Programme will contact the Ministry of Agriculture to determine the start date and duration of implementation, pointing out that the next stage involves preparing necessary studies and determining the actual cost of the required works, without a set start date so far.

Enhancing Food Security

Ahmad emphasized that rehabilitating the center is expected to contribute to raising the annual production capacity of seedlings and improving their quality, by producing healthy seedlings that meet technical specifications and in quantities that meet farmers' needs at the lowest possible cost. The project comes within the framework of the Ministry of Agriculture's efforts to rehabilitate seedling production centers and develop their production capacities, thereby supporting the agricultural production process and enhancing food security.
