The Vascular Surgery Department at Tartous National Hospital organized a scientific day today, Monday, as part of the continuing medical education program. The event covered the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases, as well as ways to develop surgical and anesthetic techniques, aiming to improve surgical outcomes and enhance the quality of healthcare provided to patients.
Early Diagnosis and Prevention of Varicose Vein Complications
Dr. Muntazer Abdullah, a participant in the scientific day's events, told the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that early diagnosis of varicose veins helps avoid the progression of the condition and increased pain or problems during childbirth. He explained that preventive and therapeutic measures in the early stages include the use of compression stockings, pharmacological treatments, and lifestyle modifications, emphasizing that surgical intervention for varicose veins should not be resorted to during pregnancy.
Development of Vascular Surgery Techniques and Graft Selection
For his part, Dr. Mustafa Nazha, a participant in the events, stated that vascular surgery globally is moving towards endovascular interventions using catheters, whether for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes, due to the less invasive options they offer compared to traditional surgery. He noted that the high cost of these technologies poses a challenge to their widespread use in Syria.
He pointed to the trend towards introducing radiofrequency or wave-based treatments for varicose veins, due to their ability to reduce complications and side effects associated with surgery. He clarified that work is underway to provide a specialized device in Tartous and train staff on its use, thereby expanding treatment options for patients. Regarding the selection of arterial grafts, Nazha explained that autologous venous grafts are considered the preferred option in many cases, while synthetic grafts made of Dacron or reinforced PTFE material are used according to the specific requirements and location of the condition.
Development of Pain Management Protocols and Regional Anesthesia
For his part, Dr. Iyad Fadel, an anesthesiology consultant and member of the Syrian Board Council, emphasized the importance of developing comprehensive pain management protocols around surgical procedures, keeping pace with scientific developments in the field of anesthesia. He indicated that the plan, established in cooperation between the Syrian and Arab Board Councils through the Association for Anesthesia and Pain Management, includes training medical staff on regional anesthesia techniques, considered a fundamental part of multimodal pain management.
He noted that implementing these protocols helps reduce the need for morphine, accelerates patient recovery, encourages the performance of same-day surgeries, and limits reliance on opioid analgesics, amid global challenges related to their availability, in line with international health guidelines and recommendations. The holding of scientific days at Tartous National Hospital is part of supporting continuing medical education, exchanging expertise among specialists, and keeping pace with developments in medical and surgical fields, thereby contributing to the professional development of health personnel and improving the quality of services provided to patients.
