The death toll from the  explosive device explosion that took place on Thursday, July 2, at  the "Al-Mushiriya" café near the old judicial palace on Al-Nasr Street in Damascus, inside a café in the Hejaz area of Damascus, has risen to 9 dead and 19 wounded.

A medical source in Damascus Health said that the death toll from the explosion in Damascus on Thursday rose to 9 people and 19 others were injured.

According to security sources, the explosion was caused by an explosive device planted by unknown persons inside the café and detonated during rush hour, which led to casualties and widespread destruction in the place.

The  director of the ambulance and emergency department, Ahmed Al-Bakour, said that 16 cases were transferred to Al-Mujtahid Hospital, including 5 deaths, in addition to one injury that was transferred to the Syrian Red Crescent Hospital, explaining that 5 of the injured are in critical condition suffering from shrapnel wounds and burns of the second and third degrees, while the rest of the injuries range from moderate to light and include fractures, cut wounds and bruises.

The head of the Syrian Bar Association, Mohammed al-Tawil, said in a statement that the café where the explosion occurred is a lawyers' lounge, and according to lawyers' groups on social media, the names of 6 lawyers who were killed and 8 were injured in the explosion were mentioned.

Damascus Internal Security chief Brig. Gen. Osama Atika said preliminary data indicated that the explosion was caused by an explosive device placed on the floor of the café and directed at customers.

The engineering units and police dogs (K9) carried out combing operations at the site to ensure that it was free of any other devices, and special task units were deployed to secure the area in anticipation of any further targeting, he said, stressing that investigations are ongoing to uncover the circumstances of the incident and those involved in it.

The explosion is the deadliest in Damascus since a suicide bombing inside a church in Damascus's Al-Duwaila neighborhood in June 2025, which killed 25 people, in an attack claimed by an extremist group.

The  Syrian authorities reported that a soldier was killed on May 19 as a result of a car bomb explosion in Damascus, near a building belonging to the Ministry of Defense, which announced at the time that the explosion coincided with the work of an army group to dismantle an explosive device.

Sources suggest that the explosive device was detonated remotely

Sources from the site of the explosion told "Syrian News" that the initial inspection confirms that the explosive device was detonated remotely using a cellular SIM card to adjust the timing during the crowding of the café.

The sources said that the security services have unloaded the recordings of surveillance cameras in the vicinity of the café, shops and the judicial palace to identify the person who entered the place and left the explosive object, and the testimonies of the café workers and witnesses who were present before the explosion are being scrutinized.

The precautionary measures included the implementation of extensive searches in the Hijaz region and neighboring markets, in anticipation of the presence of other suspicious objects, while medical staff continue to be fully alerted in operating rooms and intensive care to ensure the control of critical cases.
