Characters from the famous animated series "The Smurfs" are preparing to return to the screen for a fourth season comprising 52 new episodes, each lasting 11 minutes. The first half will begin airing in the last quarter of 2027, while the remaining episodes will be completed during 2028.
Production Details and Characters
The website "Animation World Network," specializing in the animation industry, reported on Saturday, citing the company "Peyo" which owns the rights to the Smurfs characters, that production for the new season has begun at "Peyo Production" studios, in collaboration with "Ellipse Animation," revealing the features of the new environment where the events will take place.
According to the website, the fourth season places Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Jokey, and Clumsy at the center of the events, with the wizard Gargamel returning to his adventures and schemes, alongside expanding the presence of the Smurfette girls, who appeared for the first time at the end of the third season, and continuing the appearance of characters Brainy, Clumsy, and Willow.
Creative Team
William Reinoso directs the season, while the main writers Peter Saayman and Amy Seraphin return. The Belgian company "Ellipse Animation" and "Dream Wall" studio participate in producing the new episodes; these are the two studios that worked on the previous three seasons.
Reinoso explained, according to the website, that the new season returns to the main characters derived from the original comic books, addressing contemporary themes within a comedic framework. He emphasized the importance of presenting the Smurfette girls with independent identities and traits linked to their feelings and nature.
Broadcast Dates and Celebrations
The season is scheduled to premiere in France and Belgium during the last quarter of 2027 via "TF1," "RTBF," and "Kittnet" channels. The "Nickelodeon" network will begin broadcasting it in the United States during the same period, before distributing it to other markets, while the German version will air on "KiKA" in 2028.
The production of the new season comes ahead of 2028, which marks the centenary of the birth of the Belgian artist Pierre Culliford, known as "Peyo," the creator of the Smurfs, and the 70th anniversary of the appearance of the Smurfs characters. The production company is preparing special content for this occasion.
The Belgian artist Pierre Culliford created the Smurfs characters in 1958. They first appeared in a comic story titled "The Flute with Six Holes," before becoming an independent comic series, and then television and cinematic works broadcast in many countries, becoming one of the most prominent animated characters aimed at children.
