Tourism Minister Mazen al-Salihani emphasized the importance of Syria hosting the Arab Cycling Championship, which will take place from October 2 to 12 next year, with the participation of 14 countries. He pointed out that Syria's successful bid to host the event after 19 years reflects renewed confidence in its ability to organize and receive delegations and major events.
For his part, Minister al-Salihani stated in an interview with SANA on Thursday that Syria is capable of being a meeting point for visitors, athletes, journalists, and major events from the region and the world. He added that every regional or international event that Syria successfully hosts opens a new window for it and gives thousands of people the opportunity to explore it themselves.
The Tourism Minister noted that the successful hosting of the cycling championship opens the door to more championships, exhibitions, conferences, and regional and international events in the coming period. He pointed out that hosting major events is also part of the tourism economy, as it generates demand for hotels, restaurants, transportation, and services, and creates economic activity that benefits the private sector and local communities.
He clarified that the sport of cycling carries a special promotional dimension, as the city, nature, and road become part of the sporting event, allowing Syrian sights and destinations to be presented to the Arab audience through competitions and media coverage. It is worth noting that the Syrian Arab Cycling Federation announced on August 12 the schedule for the Combined Arab Championship hosted by Syria from October 2 to 12, 2026, which includes road cycling and mountain biking competitions, as well as races dedicated to athletes with disabilities.
