Train collision in Toledo, Spain, claims at least 30 lives
A high-speed train collision in Spain kills 30 and injures others, with hospitals on standby.

At least 30 people were killed and others injured on Wednesday in a collision between two trains in the town of Orda in the city of Toledo, central Spain. The accident occurred between two high-speed trains traveling in the same direction, with one colliding with the rear of the other, causing two carriages to derail.

The Spanish News Agency quoted Esther Padilla, spokesperson for the Castile-La Mancha regional government, saying: "The accident occurred between two high-speed trains traveling in the same direction, with one colliding with the rear of the other, causing two carriages to derail, killing at least 30 people and injuring others." The spokesperson noted that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue at the accident site.

For his part, the spokesperson for the railway workers' union described the incident as "very strange," pointing out that there is no commercial stopping station in that area and that train traffic is under real-time monitoring. He confirmed that trains receive continuous information about the condition of the railway tracks and stop in case of any obstacle, such as another train.

He added that the two trains, one belonging to Renfe and the other to Iryo, were traveling between Madrid and Seville when they collided in the morning and fell from an embankment. The regional government activated the regional emergency plan, and a first aid center was established for the injured. Several medical helicopters and two intensive care ambulances were deployed, in addition to hospitals in Toledo and Alcazar de San Juan being on standby.

Spain witnessed a similar incident last January in the south of the country, which resulted in the death of 45 people, when a train derailed and collided with another train coming from the opposite direction.
