Trump Rejects Netanyahu’s Plan to Bomb Iran Before Congressional Elections
Trump rejects Netanyahu's plan to bomb Iran before congressional elections, while Israel continues planning wide strikes on civilian infrastructure.

The British newspaper Financial Times reported on Wednesday that US President Donald Trump rejected a plan by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch a "major attack" on Iran before the midterm congressional elections. The newspaper stated that Netanyahu is seeking to resume large-scale airstrikes on Iran and has already issued orders to the military to draw up plans for a "major attack."

Citing three "informed sources" who were not named, it added that the Israeli military is preparing for a bombing campaign lasting several days, scheduled to begin on October 10. The sources clarified that the bombing would target civilian infrastructure, such as power plants, alongside nuclear facilities and targets belonging to the Iranian regime.

Trump's Rejection of Attacks

According to informed sources, Trump rejected resuming military attacks before the US midterm congressional elections on November 3, citing concerns about potential negative repercussions on the Republicans' prospects. According to the newspaper, Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes in Gaza, seeks to achieve any gains at Iran's expense, hoping this might support his chances in general elections scheduled for October 27.

Hegseth's Talks with Netanyahu

On Monday, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel, where he held talks with senior officials, including Netanyahu, according to an Israeli source. The source said Israeli officials presented Hegseth with an updated list of targets in Iran, based on new intelligence, including targets related to civilian infrastructure that were not part of previous lists.

The British newspaper quoted White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly as saying that "the United States will not launch any attack on Iran before the midterm election date." Another source added that the possibility of Israel and Washington resuming airstrikes in the coming weeks "is not an excluded scenario," noting that Washington's goal is to force Iran to accept its terms.
