US President Donald Trump announced that the United States has eliminated Iran's nuclear capabilities during the attacks launched against the country, noting that Washington may remain there for a slightly longer period. This came in a speech delivered on Saturday in Highlands Heights, Kentucky, as part of a campaign tour for the midterm congressional elections scheduled for November 3.
Statements on the Attacks
Trump referred to the attacks launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, saying: "As you know, during that short trip I made to the beautiful Islamic Republic of Iran, we inflicted great destruction on them. But we also eliminated their nuclear capabilities during that trip." Trump reiterated his assertion that Iran cannot possess nuclear weapons, clarifying: "We are doing that. It will not return (nuclear weapons), this matter will end very quickly."
Stalled Negotiations
On February 28, the United States and Israel launched a war against Iran that resulted in thousands of casualties, according to Iranian authorities. Tehran responded with attacks on Israel and US sites in countries in the region, before reaching a ceasefire agreement in April. Subsequently, the United States launched attacks on sites in Iran, amid the stagnation of the negotiation process between the two countries, despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding in mid-June.
Disputes over Navigation
The stagnation of negotiations coincides with disputes between Washington and Tehran regarding navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important strategic corridors for global energy and goods supplies.
