Statements on Military Capabilities
US President Donald Trump claimed that his country inflicted significant damage on Iran due to its attacks, and that it is capable of targeting the remaining Iranian nuclear facilities within "just 10 minutes." This came in statements he made to journalists on Saturday evening while at his "Mar-a-Lago" resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
Assessment of the Nuclear and Military Situation
Trump alleged that US military operations have significantly weakened Iran's armed forces and the country's nuclear infrastructure, noting that "only a very small number of facilities remain that can be targeted." Trump said: "There is still one or two sites, in my estimation, that we need to deal with, but we can do it within 10 minutes. We have a plan like that."
Responses to Journalists' Questions
In response to a journalist's question about whether the United States would resume military operations against Iran during the coming week, Trump said: "Why are you asking such a stupid question? I cannot tell you that. Iran will never have nuclear weapons. They want to reach an agreement, let's see what happens."
Mediation Efforts and Negotiations
Trump's statements come as mediation efforts led by Qatar and Pakistan continue to revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran, amid reports of progress in indirect talks in Doha and efforts to reach understandings regarding Iran's nuclear program, sanctions, and navigation security in the Strait of Hormuz. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, which responded by targeting Israel and US assets in the region, before reaching a ceasefire agreement last April.
On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but its implementation stalled due to disagreements concerning the security of the strait.
