Trump: We May Go Further in Our Moves Against Iran
Trump says US inflicted serious damage on Iran and may escalate actions amid ongoing tensions.

US President Donald Trump announced that his country has inflicted "serious damage" on Iran in several respects, noting that the United States has "defeated them severely," justifying this by stating that "perhaps we can go a little further." This came during statements Trump made to journalists at the White House last Thursday.

Response to Voters' Questions

In response to a question regarding voters' satisfaction with developments related to Iran and fuel prices ahead of the midterm congressional elections scheduled for November 3, Trump clarified that sentiments among citizens are mixed. He added, "Some people like it very much, and others do not. Everything has a price, but many people who love their country really liked it."

Military and Diplomatic Escalation

Trump had stated last week that the United States would not launch any attack on Iran before November 3. On February 28, the United States and Israel waged war on Iran, with the latter responding with attacks on Israel and US sites in regional countries, before reaching a ceasefire in April.

The United States subsequently launched attacks on sites in Iran, amid stalled negotiations between the two countries, despite the signing of a memorandum of understanding in mid-June. The US President had announced that his country inflicted "serious damage on Iran in several respects," emphasizing that "we have defeated them severely."

Closure of the Strait

In this context, Iran announced on July 12 the re-closure of the Strait of Hormuz, following the resumption of US attacks on the 8th of the same month. These developments come amid ongoing tensions between the two countries despite previous diplomatic efforts.
