Turkey condemns escalation of drone attacks in Sudan and warns of their impact on civilians
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights condemns drone attacks that killed 306 civilians in Sudan in October.

Volker Türk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, strongly condemned the sharp escalation in drone attacks witnessed in Sudan during the current month of October, warning of the serious repercussions of these attacks on civilians.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights stated in a statement published by the UN website yesterday, Friday, that drone attacks during the first three weeks of the current month resulted in the deaths of at least 306 people and injured hundreds. It noted that the strikes targeted homes, markets, hospitals, sites for displaced persons, electricity generation stations, and water sources.

Attacks Target Displaced Persons' Sites

Türk expressed deep concern over the increasing use of drones, noting that they caused the majority of civilian deaths resulting from the conflict in Sudan this year. He reiterated his call for the parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law and refrain from targeting civilians and civilian objects.

Call to Stop the Flow of Arms

For his part, Türk called on the international community to intensify efforts to stop the continuous flow of arms and to take serious steps towards a ceasefire. He emphasized that reaching a negotiated settlement that places human rights at its core and is based on accountability for widespread violations and transgressions represents the only way to achieve sustainable peace in Sudan.

No Military Solution

He added that UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Sudan, Pia Havisto, confirmed last Wednesday that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, stressing the necessity of reaching a settlement through talks and diplomatic efforts. This came following an international meeting in Geneva to discuss coordinating peace efforts in the country.
