Surgery in Turkey

The Turkish Presidency and the relevant ministry transferred the Palestinian girl Sela Abu Karim (6 years old) from the Maghazi camp in the Gaza Strip to the Adana Education and Research Hospital in Turkey, where she underwent a successful surgery to remove a shrapnel fragment that had injured her spine and prevented her from walking. The procedure lasted about 3 hours, during which doctors removed the shrapnel and fixed metal plates and implants in her back, after which the physical therapy and rehabilitation phase began.

Children's suffering in Gaza

This initiative comes amid a severe crisis facing medical rehabilitation services in the Strip, as specialized services for children are unavailable according to a UN report. The Gaza Ministry of Health stated that 21,976 children have been killed and 45,569 children injured since October 2023. The World Health Organization estimated the number of people with life-changing injuries at around 43,000, including about 10,000 children.

Mother's hope and medical support

The mother, Nour Banat, expressed her hope for her daughter's return to normal life and thanked Turkey and President Erdogan for the assistance. Dr. Samih Kivanc Uluguner confirmed the success of the operation, while the physical therapy specialist explained that the girl is undergoing sessions twice a day to gradually regain her motor independence.
