Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called for the necessity of ending the Russia-Ukraine war through dialogue and diplomacy, noting that reaching an agreement requires significant concessions from both Russia and Ukraine, thereby putting an end to the escalating economic and political repercussions of this war.
Fidan, in statements to the Anadolu Agency and TRT Channel on the sidelines of the Group of Twenty (G20) foreign ministers' meeting in Atlanta, United States, said that the war, ongoing for about five years, has inflicted significant damage on the European and global economies, emphasizing the importance of rebuilding relations between Europe and Russia on constructive foundations following the restoration of peace.
Fidan pointed out that his country values mediation and seeks to contribute to resolving conflicts, noting that restrictions on trade movement in the Black Sea have affected the delivery of Russian and Ukrainian grain and energy sources to global markets.
Regarding the confrontation between the United States and Iran, Fidan stressed the necessity of ending the dispute between the two sides as soon as possible and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to trade, warning against the repercussions of renewed military confrontation.
Fidan clarified that countries participating in the G20 meetings generally agree on the necessity of avoiding a new confrontation between Washington and Tehran, allowing space for the diplomatic track to continue, emphasizing that dialogue should be the primary option for addressing regional and international crises.
Fidan's statements come amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and its repercussions on energy and food security and global supply chains, coinciding with tensions related to the Strait of Hormuz due to the war between America and Iran, ongoing for about nine months, and fears of the confrontation widening in the region.
