Turkey has affirmed that its Navy possesses significant and advanced expertise, ranked among the best globally in the field of mine warfare, during a speech by Navy Commander Admiral Argun Tatlıoğlu on Tuesday. This came during the "Distinguished Observer Day" events within the "Nasr-2026" military exercises dedicated to countering naval mines, held in the Turkish provinces of Izmir and Zonguldak.

For his part, Tatlıoğlu affirmed that the importance of mine warfare in naval operations remains intact despite changes in technology and combat methods, noting that the Turkish Navy combines historical heritage with modern technologies in preparation for future threats. He clarified that the future of mine warfare will rely on integrated operations combining manned platforms, unmanned systems, and advanced sensors, thereby reducing the use of personnel in hazardous areas.

In the same context, the Turkish commander pointed out that the Navy monitors and destroys mines reaching the country's shores as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war, along with unmanned suicide boats, drones, and uncontrolled explosives in the Black Sea. He warned that mine threats in strategic passages such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandab could disrupt navigation, energy flows, and trade, negatively affecting global economic stability.

The "Nasr-2026" exercises are underway with the participation of naval and air forces from the North Atlantic Alliance "NATO" and Turkey, units belonging to the Turkish Coast Guard, and forces from 24 countries including Belgium, the Netherlands, Kuwait, Romania, the Sultanate of Oman, Germany, Spain, Greece, and the United States. The exercises, which began on October 6, involve 20 ships, 5 aircraft, and unmanned systems, in addition to 89 foreigners from 26 countries, and are scheduled to conclude on the 16th of the same month.
