The rainstorm that hit several areas in the Rural Damascus Governorate today, Tuesday, resulted in two deaths and material damage, in addition to partial closures of several roads. The Syrian Civil Defense teams in the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in the governorate responded to a number of reports resulting from downbursts and heavy rains.
Amir Zarifa, director of the operations department in the Emergency and Disaster Management Directorate in Rural Damascus, clarified that the operations room received several reports coinciding with the start of the rainstorm that covered most areas of the governorate. Among them was the collapse of a wall from a balcony of a house onto a woman in the Duf al-Sakhr area near the city of Jerada, which led to her immediate death.
For his part, Zarifa added that Civil Defense teams rescued a girl who was trapped on a balcony of a house in the Al-Khadra area near Jerada, and worked to secure the site. They also responded to reports of solar panels being blown away and false ceilings collapsing, where they inspected the damaged sites, confirmed the absence of civilian casualties, and secured the damaged areas.
He pointed out that Civil Defense teams dealt with several traffic accidents, including a case of a woman being hit by a vehicle on the Damascus-Homs highway in the Qutaifa area, which led to her death. The teams transported her body to Qutaifa Hospital. A traffic accident in the Shams Suburb area resulted in the injury of a person who was taken to the nearest hospital, while damage in another incident in the Marah area on the Damascus-Homs highway was limited to material damage.
He added that Civil Defense and rescue teams, in cooperation with the Road Security Administration, worked to open and secure the Damascus-Daraa highway near the Deir Ali Bridge, which was partially closed due to flash floods that washed stones and soil onto the road. The road connecting Jerada and Al-Maliha, known as the old Ghouta road, and a main road in Zamalka, which were closed due to falling trees, were also opened.
The country is currently affected by a weather disturbance accompanied by heavy rainfall and strong thunderstorms, with a high probability of hail and strong downbursts. The weather condition began this Tuesday afternoon, October 27, and is expected to last until Saturday morning, October 31, according to weather forecasts.
