Two injured and suspect killed in school shooting in Oregon, with evacuations and investigation ongoing.

US authorities announced on Thursday evening that a shooting occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulting in at least two injuries, while the suspect died at the scene. The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) confirmed that the incident occurred earlier in the day, causing panic among students and staff.

The Associated Press quoted Sheila Miller, Communications Director for the city police department, confirming that children were among the injured, noting that authorities have not yet determined the final number of victims. Miller explained that police received a report of a shooting targeting a car outside the school, and officers arrived at the scene within minutes.

Miller noted that the suspect was shot shortly after police arrived and then died inside the school, without it being clarified whether the shots were fired by police or a bystander. She confirmed that authorities began evacuating those inside the school, describing the incident as "tragic and catastrophic."

For its part, the Bend-La Pine School District announced via its Facebook page that the school was placed under security lockdown, while police urged residents to avoid the area until response and investigation operations were completed. Nine people were killed on the 10th of the current month in a shooting at a home in Erie, Pennsylvania.

Recent data indicates that the rate of gun homicides has declined in recent years, dropping to 4.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2024, but it remains a widespread problem troubling US authorities.
