U.S. beats Bosnia 2-0 to continue World Cup journey
Host countries continue their progress in the World Cup

The United States continued its strong presence in the 2026 World Cup, after beating Bosnia with a clean sheet in the round of 32 of the World Cup, to qualify for the round of 16 of the World Cup.

With this victory, the U.S. team joined Mexico and Canada, which co-host the current tournament, which hosts 48 teams for the first time since its inception in 1930 in Uruguay.

The U.S. team put on a strong offensive display, continuing the level it showed in the group stage under Argentine coach Mauricio Pochettino, who succeeded in giving the team a clear attacking personality, and the hosts sealed the match with two clean goals, scored by Florian Balogan from a shot inside the box, and Malik Tillman from a direct free kick, against a Bosnian team that did not succeed in keeping up with its opponent.

Wasted opportunities and expulsion of an American player

The U.S. team showed a good level against Bosnia, and was the better side throughout the match, after creating more chances and threatening the goal on more than one occasion, and it  could have come out with a bigger result if it hadn't wasted a number of opportunities, although it completed the last 26 minutes with ten players, after Florian Balogan, who scored the first goal, was sent off for a harsh intervention on one of the Bosnian players.

This is not the first time that the U.S. has qualified for the round of 16 at the World Cup, as it has already reached this stage on 5 occasions (2022, 2014, 2010, 1994 and 1934).

This is only the third time that a CONCACAF team has won a knockout match in real time (excluding penalties) against a European opponent, joining Mexico (vs. Bulgaria) in 1986 and Cuba (vs. Romania) in 1938.

Figures and Statistics

Volarin Balogun scored his third goal at the 2026 World Cup, becoming the third player in the history of the United States national team to score 3 or more goals in a single edition of the tournament, after Bert Patinod (4 goals in 1930) and Landon Donovan (3 goals in 2010), and Balogun became the fourth player to score a goal and be sent off in a World Cup knockout match, after Zinedine Zidane (2006 final), Ronaldinho (2002 quarterfinals) and Garincia (1962 semi-finals).

Malik Tillman became the second player in the history of the United States national team (since 1966) to score a goal from a direct free-kick at a World Cup, after Eric Wynalda against Switzerland in 1994.

The U.S. team has scored four goals from set-pieces in the current World Cup, including Malik Tillman's goal from a direct free-kick tonight, the most goals from set-pieces scored by any team in the tournament this year.

Weston McKennie made five defensive breaks against Bosnia and Herzegovina, bringing his tally to 13 such passes at the current World Cup, at least four more than any other player in the tournament.

Edin Dzeko became the first player (excluding goalkeepers) aged 40 or over to feature in a World Cup knockout match.
