Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced his intention to relieve Prime Minister Yulia Sveridenko from her post, as part of a broad cabinet reshuffle aimed at aligning the Ukrainian government with a new political strategy, as the war with Russia continues for the fifth year in a row.
"Changes in positions will begin in Ukraine to ensure the implementation of the updated political strategy," Zelensky said in a post via the X platform, according to Bloomberg News.
Zelensky added that he offered Severidenko "the opportunity to lead a new and important area of relations with a key partner," expressing gratitude for her "clear, consistent and effective work" during her nearly year as prime minister.
"The upcoming amendments will also include the heads of law enforcement agencies," Zelensky noted, adding , "I expect that, in cooperation with members of parliament, we will make the necessary changes in the government of Ukraine."
Sources link Severidenko's dismissal to her failure to manage the economy
The Ukrainian president's move to dismiss Sviridenko represents a remarkable political step, although he did not publicly mention any problem related to her performance, but sources following up on the internal affairs confirmed to "Syrian News" that the decision is directly related to Sviridenko's inability to manage the economic file at a moment that is considered the most sensitive since the outbreak of the war, especially since it brought together the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Economy, which made it face complex challenges related to international financing, reconstruction, and controlling the worsening deficit in the public budget Under the pressure of huge military expenditures.
The sources pointed out that the amendment comes within the framework of the alignment of the new political strategy, through which Zelensky seeks to introduce more flexible figures in dealing with energy crises resulting from the destruction of generation networks, and securing military and civilian supply chains, considering that the dismissal of Sviridenko carries with it a clear message that economic performance has become a crucial criterion for officials to remain within the narrow circle of decision-making.
The sources pointed out that the decision is to reorganize the economic front through stricter management of domestic resources and modernize the mechanisms for bringing in aid from Western partners and international financial institutions, especially the International Monetary Fund, to ensure monetary sustainability in light of a protracted war.
Minister of Energy, the first candidate to succeed Sviridenko
Severidenko was appointed in July 2025. Zelensky did not specify Seferedenko's new position or who would succeed her, but added that there were also changes among the heads of law enforcement.
Opposition lawmaker Yaroslav Zeleznyak said Sveridenko was likely to take over as ambassador to the United States.
"This means that she will leave the post of prime minister and the entire government will be reconstituted," Zelezniak said on Telegram.
Under Ukrainian law, the resignation of the prime minister needs to be approved by parliament, which entails the resignation of the entire government.
MPs say potential candidates for the presidency include Sveridenko's predecessor, Energy Minister Denis Shmyhal, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, along with Serhiy Koretsky, head of the state-owned energy company Naftogaz.
