The United Nations International Organization for Migration announced on Sunday that more than 268,000 people have been displaced within Yemen due to ongoing military escalation since last July, while thousands of others fled to Djibouti. The organization noted that its latest statistics indicate that 3,836 Yemenis have reached Djibouti, half of them children.
In the same context, the International Organization for Migration warned that humanitarian needs are increasing at a faster rate than the capacity to deliver aid to families affected by the crisis. It confirmed that it is currently working to provide shelter, clean water, healthcare, and protection services, emphasizing the urgent need for additional support to cover a funding gap of $30 million.
For his part, the resumption of fighting has ended the relative calm that the country experienced since April 2022, amid casualties and injuries and increasing waves of displacement. It is worth noting that military escalation resumed since last July between government forces and the Houthi group, particularly in the provinces of Taiz and Lahij in the southwest of the country.
The organization pointed out that Yemen has been experiencing a war since the Houthis took control of the capital Sanaa and other provinces in September 2014, before the intervention of a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia in March 2015, in support of the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
