UN announces end of its mission in Somalia at the end of this month
UN ends its Somalia mission on Oct 31 per Somali government request to complete the transitional phase.

The United Nations announced that its Assistance Mission in Somalia will end its operations on 31 October, concluding more than three decades of the international organization's missions supporting peace, state-building, governance, and reconciliation in the country.

UN News Centre quoted Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric in a press statement, saying that the end of the mission's mandate comes as part of concluding its two-year transitional phase, based on Security Council resolutions 2753 of 2024 and 2809 of 2025, and in response to a request from the Federal Government of Somalia.

Dujarric clarified that the tasks assigned to the mission have been transferred, according to the transitional roadmap agreed upon between the Somali government and the UN, to Somali institutions and the UN's agencies, funds, and programs, reflecting Somalia's commitment to strengthening national ownership of peacebuilding and state-building efforts.

Dujarric said that UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised the progress made over the past decades toward consolidating peace and security in Somalia, commending the resilience and determination of the Somali people in facing serious challenges, and the efforts made in the country's journey from conflict to recovery.

Dujarric affirmed that the UN will continue to support Somalia through its agencies, funds, and programs operating in the country, in cooperation with Somali authorities, the African Union, and international partners, with the aim of enhancing peace, stability, human rights, and sustainable development.

Guterres had previously called for continued international support to consolidate progress made in Somalia, strengthen inclusive political dialogue and reconciliation, bolster institutions, and protect and promote human rights.

The UN Assistance Mission in Somalia was established in June 2013, and its mandate ended on 31 October 2024, after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution in the same month, at the request of the Somali government, transferring the mission's tasks to the UN country team and national authorities during a two-year transitional period.
