The UN Security Council on Thursday demanded an end to Houthi attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and cooperation to prevent the group from obtaining weapons and assistance related to military activities necessary to launch further attacks. This was stated in a statement issued by Council President Evangelos Simikakis, as reported by the UN News website.
Council members emphasized the importance of full implementation of Resolution 2216 of 2015 and subsequent resolutions, calling for practical cooperation, including with the Yemeni government, to prevent the flow of weapons and related materiel to the Houthis. The statement also called for preventing the group from obtaining technical assistance, training, funding, and other forms of support related to military activities.
Condemnation of Attacks on Infrastructure
The UN Security Council condemned the continuous and escalating attacks launched by the Houthis against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civil aviation and energy infrastructure, which resulted in the death and injury of civilians. The statement noted that this includes "the reckless strikes targeting King Khalid International Airport" on October 10 and 11, which killed 13 people and injured more than 300 others.
International Solidarity with Saudi Arabia
Council members expressed their solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of attacks targeting civilians and civilian property on its territory, and affirmed its inherent right to self-defense under international law. They also reiterated their strongest condemnation of the group's continued attacks and threats against commercial navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the safety of commercial ships and their crews.
Support for Political Solution in Yemen
Council members expressed their sympathy and condolences to the victims' families, the Saudi government, and its people, and wished the injured a swift and full recovery. They reaffirmed their support for the Yemeni government and their commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity of Yemen, stressing that sustainable peace in the country cannot be achieved through violence, coercion, or the use of force. They renewed their support for UN Special Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg and his efforts to achieve a comprehensive political settlement led by and owned by Yemenis through negotiation.
