UN warns of Israeli violations in southern Lebanon
UN Human Rights Office confirms ongoing Israeli attacks on civilians in southern Lebanon despite ceasefire.

The UN Human Rights Office warned of continued Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon, emphasizing that these practices raise serious concerns about the protection of civilians who have suffered widespread destruction and displacement. The warning came in a statement reported by the Lebanese National News Agency on Wednesday, stressing that reports indicate airstrikes, drone attacks, and shelling in several areas.

Continuation of Shelling and Destruction

The Office clarified that reports came of airstrikes, drone attacks, shelling, and explosions in areas including the districts of Jezzine, Marjayoun, Nabatieh al-Fawqa, Bint Jbeil, Hermel, and Sidon. It noted that in areas where Israeli forces continue to occupy, daily destruction of civilian property persists, including homes, educational and health facilities, water distribution networks, and agricultural lands.

Violations of International Law

The Office added that almost entire villages and towns have been wiped off the map, blocking any prospect of thousands of residents returning to their homes. It confirmed that these acts constitute widespread violations of international humanitarian law, some of which amount to war crimes, and possibly other crimes under international law, stressing the need to break the cycle of violence and impunity.

Casualty Toll and US Agreement

According to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, 4,387 people were killed, including at least 660 women and children and 135 health sector workers, and 12,424 others were injured during the period from March 2 to October 11, 2026. Since October 8, 2023, the cumulative total has risen to 8,954 killed and 30,660 injured. Lebanon, Israel, and the United States had signed a framework agreement in Washington on June 26, 2026, to end the war, despite the continuation of Israeli attacks.
