The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has reaffirmed its commitment to achieving peace and stability in southern Lebanon, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and joint efforts in supporting security and helping local communities recover from the effects of hostilities. The Force stated in a statement published on its official website on Saturday, on the occasion of United Nations Day, that its personnel, comprising military and civilian staff from various countries, continue to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and maintain stability.
For his part, Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Dioudato Abaniara, said in a message sent on this occasion: "Peace in southern Lebanon is not guaranteed, but requires trust, determination, and the readiness to work together," stressing the renewed commitment of the mission to peace, cooperation, and serving the communities it aims to help. Abaniara confirmed that UNIFIL will continue to work in coordination with the Lebanese Army and local communities until the last day of its operations.
This year's celebrations hold special significance, as it is the last time UNIFIL will observe United Nations Day before the end of the mission's mandate in late 2026, while continuing to focus its efforts on supporting stability during the final phase of its presence in the region. United Nations Day is celebrated on October 24 each year, commemorating the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945.
Sources indicated that the occasion comes this year amid ongoing efforts by local communities in southern Lebanon to recover from the effects of hostilities and rebuild their lives, while UNIFIL continues to carry out its tasks to support the population in returning to normal life.
