Researchers from the Neag School of Education at the University of Connecticut have developed a comprehensive assessment tool that helps schools understand the educational, behavioral, and environmental needs of students, thereby supporting the selection of appropriate educational interventions for each student.
Integrating the tool into a digital platform
The scientific website Phys.org reported on Sunday that the university granted a license to the American company Metamorphix, which specializes in developing digital solutions, to use the "ESSY" comprehensive child screening tool and integrate it into its digital platform "Cascades," aiming to help school staff monitor needs and link them to appropriate support programs more quickly.
Comprehensive assessment beyond visible behavior
The tool relies on assessing a student's strengths and challenges in multiple areas, rather than focusing solely on visible behavior. For example, a student's repeated disruptive behavior in the morning may be linked to arriving hungry, making providing a suitable breakfast more beneficial than punitive measures.
Field study results
The research team collected multiple observations from school administrations, teachers, parents, and students before conducting a wide field trial to evaluate the tool and study how it is used in making educational decisions. The study results were published in the journal "School Mental Health," which specializes in school mental health.
The researchers clarified that the tool was developed with support from the Institute of Education Sciences of the US Department of Education, while its integration into the "Cascades" platform allows educational staff to access data that helps them understand student circumstances more comprehensively and identify appropriate interventions.
The team noted that the collaboration between the university and the company aims to make the tool available on a wider scale and reduce the time gap between identifying student needs and providing appropriate support, reflecting a trend toward leveraging technology to develop the school environment.
