University of Damascus Organizes Workshop on Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing
Damascus University's Faculty of Economics enhances students' awareness of international and local anti-money laundering regulations.

The Faculty of Economics at the University of Damascus, in collaboration with "Al-Iltizam for Consulting" company, organized a workshop today, Saturday, on the topic of combating money laundering and terrorist financing. The aim is to enhance students' awareness of the risks associated with these practices, introduce adopted procedures to mitigate them, and highlight the role of financial institutions in protecting the financial and banking sectors. This supports compliance with international standards and improves the investment environment in Syria.

Dean of the Faculty of Economics at the University of Damascus, Ali Kanaan, stated in a statement to SANA that the faculty works to organize diverse workshops to raise the level of economic, legal, and social awareness among students. These workshops introduce them to modern specializations and scientific and practical developments, thereby enhancing their knowledge and linking theoretical aspects to practical reality.

For his part, economic expert in the field of combating money laundering, Ammar Ma'ruf, who lectured at the workshop, clarified that the event targets students of the Faculty of Economics to introduce them to the concepts of combating money laundering and terrorist financing, the risks that countries and financial institutions may face, particularly in Syria, and the necessary procedures to deal with them and mitigate their effects.

Meanwhile, the CEO of "Al-Iltizam for Consulting" company, Abdou Muqsi Yousef, explained that the company launched an awareness campaign on combating money laundering and terrorist financing. The campaign aims to spread financial culture and introduce the necessary procedures to protect the Syrian financial and banking sector, while enhancing awareness of compliance requirements in this field.

Combating money laundering and terrorist financing falls within the efforts aimed at protecting the integrity of the financial system and preventing the exploitation of institutions and financial channels to transfer illegal funds or direct them to finance terrorist activities. These efforts rely on legislative and supervisory frameworks, strengthening compliance procedures within financial institutions, and raising awareness among employees, students, and relevant groups.

Previously, on July 21, the Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Authority held a workshop in Damascus titled "Towards the National Strategy for Combating Money Laundering, Terrorist Financing, and Proliferation of Weapons," in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The goal was to prepare a national strategy to combat these crimes and enhance coordination among concerned authorities.
