Matthew Whitaker, the US Ambassador to NATO, confirmed on Tuesday that the mechanism for supplying Ukraine with American weapons is "ongoing," noting that the United States continues to sell equipment and ammunition to its European and Canadian allies, who in turn provide them to Ukraine.
Whitaker clarified in an interview with Agence France-Presse on the sidelines of the Warsaw Security Forum that he is unaware of any changes to this program, despite acknowledging that the equipment available through the PURL program does not currently meet needs to the required extent, with high demand for air defense systems.
For his part, the US Ambassador pointed out that time is critical, explaining that Ukraine is facing a winter during which its electricity and heating infrastructure could come under significant pressure if there is no halt to strikes on energy facilities.
In the same context, Whitaker's comments came as Washington's European allies await the results of an official review of the US military presence in Europe, amid fears that it could lead to a reduction of US forces there.
